These pages set out how Book Map works, how we handle information, and the limits of the service. They apply to anyone using this website in Australia.
Terms of Use
These terms govern your use of the Book Map website and related services (“Book Map”, “we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Who these terms apply to
They apply to visitors looking for books, and to bookstores that send us shop details or shelf photos. If you use Book Map on behalf of a shop, you confirm you are authorised to bind that shop.
What Book Map is
Book Map is an information service. It helps people find second-hand books that participating bookstores have recently reported as being on the shelf. We are not a bookstore, marketplace, auctioneer, or payment provider. We do not take orders or hold stock. Any purchase, hold, or collection is solely between you and the shop.
Using the site
- Use Book Map only for lawful, personal, and genuine enquiries about books and shops listed here.
- Do not misuse the contact forms (including spam, harassment, or sending someone else’s personal information without a good reason).
- Do not scrape, harvest, or bulk-copy listings in a way that harms the service, overload our servers, or attempt to break security or access another person’s data.
- Do not upload or send material that is unlawful, misleading, or that you do not have the right to share.
- Shop listings, addresses, and stock reports are supplied by participating stores or compiled from information they send us. We may edit, refuse, or remove material at our discretion.
Enquiries to shops
If you use the contact form, you ask us to pass your name, email, and message to that bookstore. We do not control whether or how they reply. Do not include payment card details in a message.
Bookstore operators
Operators who send photos or details to Book Map must have authority to do so and must only send information they are entitled to share. They are responsible for the accuracy of their shop details and stock reports, and for dealing with customers who contact them about listed titles.
Intellectual property
The Book Map name, design, and original site content are owned by us or used under licence. Book titles, author names, and similar bibliographic details are used to identify works and remain the property of their respective owners. You may not copy the site, our branding, or our compiled listings for a competing service without permission. See also our Copyright notice.
Privacy
How we handle personal information is described in our Privacy Policy. Using the site includes the technical processing needed to show pages, maps, and fonts.
Availability
We aim to keep Book Map available but do not guarantee uninterrupted, timely, or error-free access. We may change, pause, or discontinue features, including removing a shop or listing, at any time.
Liability
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts, or modifies any consumer guarantee, right, or remedy under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Book Map is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We are not liable for loss arising from reliance on listings, failed or delayed contact with a shop, stock no longer being available, map or address inaccuracy, or your use of third-party websites or map tiles linked from this site. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited (at our option) to resupplying the relevant service or paying the cost of doing so.
Suspension
We may suspend or block access if we reasonably believe these terms have been broken or the service is being abused.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. The updated terms apply from the date they are posted on this page. Continued use of the site after that date is acceptance of the changes.
General
If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. These terms are the main agreement between you and us about use of the public website. They are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. You submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria and the Commonwealth of Australia.
Contact
Questions about these terms: use the contact form on a shop listing, or email bookmap.inbox@gmail.com.
Privacy Policy
This policy explains how Book Map handles personal information. We treat privacy in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, as they apply to us.
Collection notice
We collect personal information so we can run this website, list participating bookstores, and pass your enquiry to a shop if you ask us to. If you do not provide the details a form asks for, we may not be able to send that enquiry. You can browse and search without creating an account.
Who we are
Book Map operates this website from Australia. For privacy questions, email bookmap.inbox@gmail.com.
What we collect
- Enquiries you send to a shop — name, email address, message, the shop you contacted, and any book title you mention.
- Information from participating bookstores — shop name, address, phone, email addresses they give us, and stock reports (including photos they send so titles can be listed).
- Technical data — server logs such as IP address, date and time, browser type, and pages requested, used to run and protect the site.
Cookies and similar technology
The public site does not use advertising cookies or a tracking pixel. Your browser may still store small amounts of data needed for the page to work. Map tiles are requested from OpenStreetMap / CARTO, and some fonts may be requested from Google Fonts. Those requests can include your IP address. You can block third-party content in your browser; maps or type may then not display as intended.
How we use it
- to pass your enquiry to the relevant bookstore so they can reply
- to list shops and reported stock on the public map and book list
- to operate, secure, and improve Book Map
- to contact a shop about their listing where needed
- to meet a legal obligation if one applies
We do not sell personal information. We do not use your enquiry to send marketing, and we do not add you to a newsletter.
Who we share it with
If you contact a shop through Book Map, we send your name, email, and message to that shop. After that, their own privacy practices apply to any reply.
We may also share information with service providers who host email or the site, with map and font providers as described above, or if required by Australian law. Some of those providers may process technical data on servers outside Australia. By using the site you acknowledge that overseas handling may not be subject to the same laws as Australia. We take reasonable steps to deal with reputable providers.
Storage and security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we become aware of an eligible data breach that we are required to report, we will follow the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
How long we keep it
Enquiry records and shop correspondence are kept only as long as needed to provide the service, handle a complaint, or meet a legal requirement, and are then deleted or de-identified. Server logs are kept for a short operational period unless we need them to investigate abuse or a security issue.
Access, correction, and complaints
You can ask to access or correct personal information we hold about you, or make a privacy complaint, by emailing bookmap.inbox@gmail.com. We will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
Anonymity and children
You may search the site without identifying yourself. Book Map is a general audience site. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children for marketing. A parent or guardian who believes we hold a child’s information can contact us to ask that it be deleted.
Changes
We may update this policy by posting a new version here. The “Last updated” date shows when it last changed.
Disclaimer
Book Map is an information service for finding second-hand books reported by participating bookstores in Australia. Content on this site is general information only. It is not a live catalogue, a valuation, or an offer to sell.
Stock and shop details
- Listings show what a shop last reported, not a live inventory count. A title may already have been sold, misplaced, priced differently, or never accurately read from a shelf photo.
- Titles are often taken from photos using automated reading. Spelling, missing volumes, and similar errors can occur.
- Shop names, addresses, opening hours (if any), and phone numbers can change. Map pins and matched addresses are approximate.
- We do not inspect stock ourselves and we do not guarantee that any book is available, in a particular condition, edition, or offered at any price.
No sale through this site
Book Map does not sell books, take payment, or hold goods. Any purchase, reservation, or collection arrangement is between you and the bookstore. Their terms, refund policy, and Australian Consumer Law obligations apply to that transaction — not ours.
No endorsement
Listing a shop does not mean we recommend it, have verified its practices, or have any ownership interest in it. Listing a book does not mean we have any rights in that work.
Third-party content and links
Bibliographic details (titles and authors) and map imagery come from shops or third-party services. External websites are not under our control. We are not responsible for their content, availability, or privacy practices.
No professional advice
Nothing on this site is legal, financial, collecting, or conservation advice. You should make your own enquiries with the shop before travelling or relying on a listing.
Australian Consumer Law
This disclaimer does not exclude rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded. Subject to those rights, we are not liable for loss you suffer because a listing was wrong, out of date, or incomplete, because a pin was in the wrong place, or because a shop did not respond.

This website
The layout, original text, graphics, logo, and software that make up Book Map are protected by copyright under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). You may browse and print pages for personal, non-commercial use. You may not reproduce the site, our branding, or our databases for a commercial or competing purpose without our written permission.
Linking
You may link to public pages on Book Map in a way that is fair and not misleading. You may not present our pages as your own or use our logo without permission.
Book titles and authors
Book titles, author names, and related bibliographic information appear so readers can identify works reported by shops. Those names remain the property of the relevant authors, publishers, and rights holders. Listing a title does not mean we have any right in the underlying literary work. We rely on fair dealing and similar exceptions only insofar as Australian law allows for identification and reporting of this kind.
Maps and fonts
Map tiles © OpenStreetMap contributors, and cartography © CARTO, used under their respective licences. Some typefaces are served by Google Fonts under their licences. Those licences remain with the original owners.
Shop photos
Photographs sent by a bookstore remain that shop’s material. We use them only to identify titles for the listing service. Sending a photo to Book Map is permission for that limited use until the shop asks us to stop.
Trade marks
Book Map and the site logo are used as the name of this service. Other names on the site (including shop names and publisher or series names) are used to identify those businesses or works and remain their owners’ marks.
Notice of claimed infringement
If you believe material on Book Map infringes your copyright, email bookmap.inbox@gmail.com with:
- your name and contact details
- the work you own and where it appears on this site (including the URL if you have it)
- a statement that you are the owner or are authorised to act, and that you believe the use is not authorised
We will consider valid notices and may remove or disable the material while we look into it.
